ARE YOUR DESIGN VALIDATION TOOLS DOING THE JOB?

Producers of electronic and electro-mechanical devices know that they must minimize manufacturing and service costs to ensure profitability. Accordingly, they require their engineers to provide solid designs with predictable and measurable performance limits. Design quality becomes even more important for products that must meet demanding performance and safety requirements, and for "guaranteed for life" products that must operate properly for many years.

Although one could debate the merits of the various tools, it's easier to skip to the bottom line: add (a) what you're spending to correct design problems during the pilot production phase, to (b) the amount you spend to correct design problems after your products have been shipped (e.g. warranty costs).

As a rule-of-thumb, if the total design-correction expenditures are more than a few percent of sales, your design quality tools are not adequate. If this is your situation, your tools are probably solely SPICE or some other simulation tool, possibly incorporating some Monte Carlo risk assessment. This is not enough. You need to add math-based analysis, such as Design Master.

On the other hand, if your design-correction expenditures are less than a few percent, can you do better? For example, shaving a half-percent or more off your costs could easily pay for the modest price of employing a better tool such as DM, which also provides numerous benefits that simulations don’t offer:

DESIGN MASTER SAVES MONEY

Among the descriptions of the wide variety of design validation methodologies, one will find the term "savings" used a lot, but it is rarely quantified. An exception is DACI's Worst Case Analysis(+) methodology (WCA+), upon which Design Master is based. We found that WCA+ yielded average savings about seven times higher than the costs of performing the analysis, or a return on investment (ROI) of 600%. It's important to note that this ROI was achieved for products that had already been "approved" by standard simulation-based design validation. Although the survey was done years ago, we've seen nothing subsequently that would dispute that figure. If anything, advances in Design Master (now at V8) have continued to expand useful output as well as improve analytical efficiency, thereby increasing ROI.

NOT AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE

Design Master is practical. DM was developed by hardware engineers more than a decade ago, and has been extensively used
and improved by hardware engineers ever since.

ALL THE TOOLS YOU NEED

DM output now includes minimum, average, typical, maximum, standard deviation, and Cpk (including the combined effects of all variables), plus probabilistic risk assessment, practical sensitivities, and optimization. Further cost savings are achieved by DM's numerous productivity tools, including automated build of probability models from user test data, automated report generation in Word document format, auto-scaled graphs, and user-editable help files. DM is also the only software we've seen that correctly guides the user in the application of static versus dynamic variables, to help ensure accurate probability estimates.

IMPROVE DESIGN CLARITY WHILE REDUCING LIABILITY

In addition to the direct savings derived from the reduction of manufacturing and service costs, WCA+ has substantial indirect benefits. This includes design clarity (DM encourages thinking, rather than simulation design-hacking), which improves the designer's understanding of all facets of a design, leading to creative insights in addition to ensuring high reliability.

Using DM to create solid WCA+ reports also demonstrates a commitment to design quality that can be critical in limiting liability if warranty issues occur.

ADVANCED INSIGHTS PLUS FLEXIBILITY

Circuit files from DACI's data library contain advanced design formulas addressing issues (such as op amp open loop gain limitations) that are often overlooked by simple cookbook circuits. Like all DM worksheets, they are completely editable so that they can be tailored to your specific needs.

DESIGN MASTERTM PROFESSIONAL EDITION FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • Design Master's copyrighted "explode" feature guides you in breaking an equation into its constituent terms, allowing complex equations to be  easily and accurately constructed and analyzed.
  • Design Master generates a comprehensive report in Word document format, including numerous options (single record, complete worksheet, variables, probability plots, sensitivities, and graphs). In addition, the report includes text and images from the Worksheet Notes and Record Notes screens. The crisp and detailed report is suitable for submittal to the most demanding customer or project manager.
  • Solves formulas containing complex numbers and automatically generates Bode plots
  • Computes the Phase Margin for feedback systems
  • Large and complicated Worksheet formulas can be compacted into a Variables Model that can be easily exported into other analyses
  • Solves formulas with circular references
  • A Formula Model can be created to obtain solutions to multiple intermingled feedback loops
  • The SOLVE function can be used to determine the value required to achieve a desired result, considering the effects of all other variables.

When You Subscribe to the Professional Edition You'll Receive the Following Additional Benefits

  • The DMeXpertTM Assistant add-on
