ARE YOUR DESIGN VALIDATION TOOLS DOING THE JOB?
Producers of electronic and electro-mechanical devices know that they must minimize manufacturing and service costs to ensure profitability. Accordingly, they require their engineers to provide solid designs with predictable and measurable performance limits. Design quality becomes even more important for products that must meet demanding performance and safety requirements, and for "guaranteed for life" products that must operate properly for many years.
Although one could debate the merits of the various tools, it's easier to skip to the bottom line: add (a) what you're spending to correct design problems during the pilot production phase, to (b) the amount you spend to correct design problems after your products have been shipped (e.g. warranty costs).
As a rule-of-thumb, if the total design-correction expenditures are more than a few percent of sales, your design quality tools are not adequate. If this is your situation, your tools are probably solely SPICE or some other simulation tool, possibly incorporating some Monte Carlo risk assessment. This is not enough. You need to add math-based analysis, such as Design Master.
On the other hand, if your design-correction expenditures are less than a few percent, can you do better? For example, shaving a half-percent or more off your costs could easily pay for the modest price of employing a better tool such as DM, which also provides numerous benefits that simulations don’t offer:
DESIGN MASTER SAVES MONEY
Among the descriptions of the wide variety of design validation methodologies, one will find the term "savings" used a lot, but it is rarely quantified. An exception is DACI's Worst Case Analysis(+) methodology (WCA+), upon which Design Master is based. We found that WCA+ yielded average savings about seven times higher than the costs of performing the analysis, or a return on investment (ROI) of 600%. It's important to note that this ROI was achieved for products that had already been "approved" by standard simulation-based design validation. Although the survey was done years ago, we've seen nothing subsequently that would dispute that figure. If anything, advances in Design Master (now at V8) have continued to expand useful output as well as improve analytical efficiency, thereby increasing ROI.

Design Master is practical. DM was developed by hardware engineers more than a decade ago, and has been extensively used and improved by hardware engineers ever since.
